About Anthony Barnes, LCSW

About Me

I’m Anthony, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who believes meaningful change often begins with understanding ourselves rather than judging ourselves.

My approach is grounded in curiosity, compassion, and the understanding that many of our patterns developed for understandable reasons. Together, we can explore these experiences, develop greater self-understanding, and discover new ways of relating to ourselves and others.

Explore My Background & Experience

Clinical Experience & Professional Background

My clinical experience includes working with adults navigating a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, emotional dysregulation, and significant life transitions.

My professional background includes over 11 years of experience at Kaiser Permanente. During that time, my clinical work has included adult psychiatry and intensive outpatient treatment settings, supporting individuals experiencing complex emotional and psychological challenges.

My responsibilities have included conducting comprehensive mental health assessments, facilitating therapeutic groups, providing individual therapeutic support, and collaborating with multidisciplinary treatment teams to coordinate individualized care.

This experience has reinforced the importance of meeting people where they are, recognizing their strengths, and approaching even longstanding patterns with curiosity rather than judgment.

I bring these experiences into my private practice, where I offer individualized psychotherapy that emphasizes collaboration, self-understanding, and meaningful change.

My private practice is independent of Kaiser Permanente and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the organization.

Trauma-Informed Experience & Specialties

Much of my clinical work focuses on understanding how earlier experiences, relationships, and environments can shape the ways we respond to ourselves and others.

I work with adults navigating complex trauma, attachment wounds, emotionally immature family dynamics, narcissistic abuse, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and chronic self-criticism.

These experiences can contribute to patterns such as difficulty setting boundaries, prioritizing others’ needs, feeling responsible for other people’s emotions, or struggling to feel secure in relationships.

My approach integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Brainspotting, mindfulness, attachment-based perspectives, and somatic approaches.

Rather than viewing difficult emotions or coping strategies as problems to eliminate, I encourage a compassionate exploration of what these experiences may be communicating and how they developed.

Trauma-informed care also means respecting your autonomy, recognizing the importance of emotional safety, and allowing therapy to move at a pace that feels appropriate for you.

LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy & Experience

Providing LGBTQ+ affirming care is an important part of my clinical identity and the values that guide my work.

I recognize that LGBTQ+ individuals may navigate unique experiences related to identity, belonging, family relationships, discrimination, internalized stigma, and societal expectations.

My work includes supporting individuals exploring sexual orientation and gender identity, navigating family rejection or difficult relationship dynamics, and developing greater self-acceptance and authenticity.

I also recognize the importance of intersectionality and how race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexuality, and other aspects of identity can influence our experiences and relationships.

At the same time, I don’t assume that LGBTQ+ clients necessarily want therapy to focus on their identities. You deserve a space where your identity is respected and affirmed while you explore whatever concerns are most meaningful to you.

My goal is to offer a collaborative, culturally responsive environment where you can show up authentically without feeling pressured to explain or defend who you are.

Beyond the Therapy Room

Outside of work, I enjoy art, yoga, and spending time with my family. I love being outdoors, whether I’m hiking or simply enjoying time in nature.

These are some of the things I make time for in my own life—a chance to move, be creative, and connect with the people I love.
